How To Fix A Dripping Tap

Dripping taps: it's an annoying sound, a waste of water, and it means your water bills are probably creeping upwards. Thankfully, fixing a simple drip is something many homeowners can tackle themselves. Here at Ninja Plumbers, your favourite plumber in Fulham, we're always happy to share some of our know-how. Let's help you stop those drips!

Step 1: It's Safety First

Before doing anything else, turn off the water supply to the tap. Find the isolation valves usually located under the sink. Twist them shut and test that the water flow has stopped. Also, plug the drain. No point risking losing parts if they slip!

Step 2: What Kind of Tap Is It?

Traditional taps tend to use rubber washers which age and crack, causing drips. Newer styles usually have 'ceramic disc' cartridges. Here's the difference:

Traditional Washers: If you have two separate taps (hot/cold), this is likely your culprit.
Ceramic Disc: Single-lever mixer taps usually use these. They last longer, but are trickier to replace yourself.

Step 3: Fixing a Worn Washer

Let's get those traditional taps drip-free again:

Remove the Handle: A tiny screw typically holds it on. A bit of gentle prying with a flat screwdriver and it should lift off.
Unscrew the Top: Use a spanner (wrench). Be careful not to mar the finish – wrap a little cloth around the tap as protection if needed.
The Culprit: The washer sits at the bottom, usually held by a tiny nut. Remove and examine it.
New Washer Time: Take the old one to a hardware store to get a perfect match.
Reverse the Steps! Carefully attach the new washer, reassemble the tap, and gently turn on the water supply. Test, and hopefully, no more drips!

Step 4: More Complex Issues (Call Your Plumber in Fulham!)

Sometimes, drips involve:

  • Ceramic Disc Taps: The internal disc itself gets damaged and requires replacement. This can be fiddly, so calling a professional plumber is probably best.
  • Drips Behind the Handle: Worn internal 'O' rings might be the cause. Again, replacing these can be tricky and leaks in this area can lead to hidden damage.
  • Drips When The Tap's Off: This could mean worn seals within the pipework. Best to call the professionals to find the exact issue.
  • Don't Forget Ninja Plumbers
